Satellite Programme: Planetscope
Programme details
Programme description
Satellite constellation for high-resolution land observation. Over 180 satellites in orbit at any time foreseen; initially named “Dove”, now “Flock”.
Commercially-based programme developed and operated by Planet Labs Inc., San Francisco, CA, USA.
The platforms (3U CubeSats) are actively stabilised over 3 axes.
The design life time is 3 years.
The satellites exploit sunsynchronous orbits at LST ranging from 9:30 to 11:30, depending on the flight opportunity. Some units have been flown on the ISS (407 km, 51.6° inclination).
The replacement policy is based on frequent launches to implement and maintain the constellation.
