BackForward Satellite Programme: GNSS Navigation and Occultation Measurement Satellites

Programme details
Programme description
  • Constellation of micro-satellites (20 at regime) for radio occultation sounding.
  • Commercial programme implemented by PlanetiQ of Golden, CO, USA.  Data possibly bought by NOAA.
  • The platforms are actively stabilised over 3 axes.
  • The design life time is 3 years for individual satellites, undetermined for the full constellation.
  • The replacement policy is based on launching new satellite(s) before the status of the constellation is unacceptably degraded, taking advantage of launch opportunities.
  • The orbit heights, ranging around 600 km, possibly sunsynchronous, are determined by the launch opportunity.
  • See detailed description at https://directory.eoportal.org/web/eoportal/satellite-missions/g/gnomes.
