  • First of the high-priority Copernicus Sentinel Expansion Missions for land surface
  • Main mission: to support forest management, to monitor subsidence and soil moisture and to discriminate crop types  
  • Complementary mission: contribute to the monitoring of polar ice sheets and ice caps, sea-ice extent in the polar region, and of seasonal snow.
  • To operate in a constellation of (initially two) identical satellites, covering a period > 7 years.
