BackForwardInstrument:  LMX

Instrument details
Acronym LMX
Full name GeoXO Lightning Mapper
Purpose Proxy for convective precipitation, proxy for NOx generation, study of Earth electric field. severe storm analysis and increases lead time to detect tornado formation. Also improves lightning hazard detection, hurricane intensity prediction, wildfire detection, precipitation estimation, and aviation hazard mitigation.
Short description A single-channel CMOS sensor operating at 777.4 nm optical detector used to detect, locate, and measure the intensity, duration, and extent of lightning flashes.
Background LMX will continue observations provided by the GOES-R Series Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) and potentially improve its resolution and sampling.
Scanning Technique Electronic, 3-axis stabilised satellite, single detector matrix
Resolution 8 km or better at ssp.
Coverage / Cycle Large fraction of the disk continuously observed. Area expanded over GLM to cover Alaska.
Mass Power Data Rate 40 Mbits/sec
