Full name Instruments covering 1300-3000 nm
Definition SWIR band, to observe surface, aerosol, cloud microphysics, the water vapour bands around 1380 nm and 2700 nm, and several species such as CH4, CO, CO2 and N2O. Involved instrument types: • Moderate-resolution optical imager, • High-resolution optical imager, • Cross-nadir scanning SW sounder, • Limb sounder.
Relevant instruments and their contribution

The sorting column describes how the instruments, by design, have the potential to contribute to certain pre-determined capabilities, assuming nominal operation of space and ground segments. For this particular capability, instrument performance is considered to be driven by:

  • the instrument type
  • the possible coverage of bands of some trace gases.

The rating criteria are as follows:

  1. SWIR spectrometer for aerosol and vegetation and several species such as CH4, CO, CO2, H2O and N2O.
  2. SWIR hyperspectral radiometer for fine analysis of vegetation.
  3. SWIR radiometer flown in LEO, and SWIR radiometer flown in GEO or Molniya.
  4. SWIR spectrometer for aerosol and vegetation and some species such as CO2 and H2O; OR SWIR high-resolution imager for land observation.
  5. Limb sounder for atmospheric chemistry and aerosol in the high troposphere and low stratosphere.
