Definition
This type of mission designates special cameras observing the Earth all-time and recording rate and intensity of flashes in a given area (the IFOV), from a Geostationary or Low Earth Orbit.
Relevant instruments and their contribution
The sorting column describes how the instruments, by design, have the potential to
contribute to certain pre-determined capabilities, assuming nominal operation of
space and ground segments. For this particular capability, instrument performance
is considered to be driven by:
the observation availability (night only or night and day);
the geostationary or non-geostationary orbit, the latter being limited by the short useful observing time (around 90 s) over the field-of-view.
Sorting criteria and colour code:
CCD NIR camera with very narrow-bandwidth filter at 777.4 nm (oxygen line) continuously operating from geostationary orbit.
CCD NIR camera with very narrow-bandwidth filter at 777.4 nm (oxygen line) continuously operating from LEO along the satellite motion, night and day.
Multi-channels coincidence photometer in UV, VIS and NIR operating from LEO along the satellite motion only during night.
