Interrogation, Recording and Location System
Purpose
To collect data from ground-based observing platform, and provide their location
Short description
Data are collected from Data Collection Platforms upon interrogation. By a sequence of two interrogations the platform location is determined. DCP bit rate: 1 kbps
Background
IRLS was the precursor of the Data Collection System mission. It was used, i.a., in support of the Nimbus-6 Tropical Wind Energy-conversion and Reference Level Experiment (TWERLE) in association with 300 floating balloons, during the First GARP Global Experiment (FGGE)
